What is Camp SMILE?

Camp SMILE is a literacy-focused summer camp experience that helps children stay engaged in reading while building social-emotional skills and experiencing consistent care in a positive community. We combine reading support, fun learning stations, creative activities, and faith formation to create “sacred moments” that help children grow academically, socially, and spiritually.
Camp SMILE is part of Project SMILE, Kelley Chapel United Methodist Church’s year-round enrichment ministry, which also includes a book club and a Winter Camp session.

What Makes Camp SMILE Different?

A whole-child approach

We care about reading skills and the child behind the skills. Camp SMILE supports academic growth, confidence, character, and community.

Intergenerational support + trained leaders

Camp SMILE is powered by a blend of trained staff, volunteers (including retired educators), and youth/young adult leaders who receive training and mentorship as they serve as counselors.

Real results that matter

We focus on preventing summer learning loss and building momentum. In recent pre- and post-assessments, no campers experienced reading loss, and many showed measurable gains from the start to the end of camp.

What Families Can Expect

A safe, structured, joyful day

Your child will experience a predictable daily rhythm with caring adults who set clear expectations and create a welcoming environment. Campers participate in small-group and whole-group activities designed to build confidence and encourage positive peer relationships.

Literacy that meets kids where they are

We support reading growth through engaging literacy activities and targeted practice that helps children strengthen skills without feeling overwhelmed. Our goal is to help campers build confidence, stay motivated, and keep reading all summer.

Social-emotional growth

Campers practice skills like cooperation, empathy, self-regulation, and teamwork through guided activities, group routines, and supportive coaching from staff.

Faith formation in kid-friendly ways

Children engage Bible stories with curiosity and creativity—building scriptural literacy and imagination while learning how faith connects to everyday life.
